From Hot Dogs to Brick Ovens: The Story of Chef Benard Tamburello
At the heart of Vecchia Pizzeria, nestled in the Preserve community of Hoover, Alabama, lay a narrative woven from threads of grit, grief, and an undeniable passion for food. Chef Benard Tamburello had emerged from a childhood marked by loss in Homewood, Alabama, channeling his heartache into a culinary journey that would leave a lasting imprint on Birmingham’s dining landscape.
At just nineteen, life hurled tragedy at Benard. An accident stole his father and nearly claimed his own life. In the aftermath, he faced a choice: let grief consume him or rise from the ashes of despair. He chose to ignite a fire within—a relentless drive to create something meaningful.
His culinary story began at Gus’ Hot Dogs in 1992. It was there that Benard first tasted the fast-paced hustle of the restaurant world. Without formal training or familial ties to the culinary arts, he relied solely on his determination. Each hot dog he served became an opportunity to learn, an early step toward crafting something more significant.
In 1996, he took another leap and opened Bernie’s Grill—a modest establishment that proved he could carve out his own niche in the industry. As time passed, this initial spark transformed into a vibrant flame. He expanded with Bernie’s on Main Street and La Dolce Vita, each new venture reflecting his growing love for food and Italian heritage.
“La Dolce Vita was my first love letter to Italy,” he often shared with pride. It wasn’t just about serving pasta or pizza; it was about presenting real Italian cuisine outside of tired clichés.
But it was the year 2014 that marked a pivotal turn in Benard’s life and career. With unwavering support from his wife Brianna, they embarked on a bold venture—opening Vecchia Pizzeria & Mercato. Situated across from Moss Rock Nature Preserve in Hoover, Vecchia introduced true Neapolitan pizza to Birmingham’s culinary scene. The Acunto brick ovens imported directly from Naples promised authenticity.
Walking into Vecchia felt like stepping into another world. The aroma of wood-fired magic enveloped diners as they gathered around tables adorned with fresh ingredients and heartfelt conversation. Each pizza served wasn’t just food; it was a homage to family recipes handed down through generations—a way for Benard to share his journey with others.
“Living the dream,” he would say when asked how things were going—no hint of sarcasm there. It became his mantra—a reminder of resilience built through years filled with scars and setbacks. Battling cancer and navigating through COVID-19 chaos tested him but also forged Vecchia’s spirit deeper into the community fabric.
The crackling sound of crusts baking in those authentic ovens resonated with every family who sat beneath Vecchia’s roof—each slice embodying love poured into the craft by Benard and his dedicated team.
Today, Vecchia Pizzeria stands as more than just a restaurant; it has become a cornerstone of Hoover’s food community—a testament to what can be achieved when pain is transformed into purpose. Alongside Moss Rock Tacos & Tequila, another brainchild born from Benard’s dreams, he continues shaping Alabama’s culinary landscape—one dish at a time.
When guests enter Vecchia now, they’re not merely seeking dinner; they’re entering a story—a saga crafted from survival and spirit that transcends mere sustenance. Each bite resonates with tradition, warmth, and an unmistakable essence drawn from the heart of Chef Benard Tamburello himself. Here lies more than pizza; here lies legacy served on every plate.
